Dr. J. S. Steinman, M.D., is the overseer of the Medical Pavilion. An accomplished surgeon, Steinman rose to a degree of prominence throughout Rapture, but he slowly started to lose his grip on reality.
J. S. Steinman was born into a Jewish-American family and was a respected medical professional at the Benjamin Church Medical College. Steinman had a successful career as an orthopedic surgeon but earned his highest accolades in the field of plastic surgery, inventing techniques that revolutionized the field.
A perfectionist, Steinman fell in love with his work, so much so that he became obsessed with human anatomy. Wanting to become a "Picasso of Surgery", Steinman began to mutilate his unfortunate patients' bodies in horrific ways, usually resulting in death.
Dr. Steinman, growing so utterly obsessed with making his patients beautiful, began to hallucinate Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, and looked upon her down the road of insanity

Now Dr.Steinman lives in Rapture a picture perfect place built by the government. Over time Rapture was abandoned by it's founders deemed a failed experimental town. But the people of Rapture still thrive and the good doctor still makes his patents beautiful weather they want it or not.
Those that live through Steinmen's operations are left deformed and mentally unstable also becoming violent to outsiders.

Steinmen started to trade with the Reapers for more Patents. He gives them children and they give him more canvases.

Some of Rapture's inhabitents have started to wonder outside of Rapture. Mentally unstable they attack anyone they come across. Steinman does his best to keep everyone inside Rapture's gates, but he can't watch everyone. Those that die at Rapture are put in cages for more experimentation.

Steinmen, running low on patents and having a need to make the world beautiful started to seek out patents from other communities, promising perfection and a long life.
